The best Magento AI chatbot for most small Australian stores is Matey if you want one built and kept accurate for you, Tidio if you want the cheapest one you set up yourself, and Magenable's Shop Guide or Mirasvit's eChat if you have a Magento developer and want an extension on your own server.

Below are seven options with their prices in Australian dollars, who each one suits, and its drawbacks, plus what an extension really costs once the developer and the AI fees are in. Matey builds custom AI chatbots for Australian online stores, Magento ones included, so we're one of the options. For the bigger picture across every platform, see our guide to AI chatbots for ecommerce.

What are the best Magento AI chatbots?

The best Magento AI chatbots for Australian stores are Tidio, Matey, Text by LiveChat, Magenable's Shop Guide, Mirasvit eChat, Meetanshi's Magento 2 AI Chatbot, and Webkul's AI Chatbot.

Prices are from each company's own pricing page, for Magento Open Source on monthly billing where it's offered, converted at the Reserve Bank's rate of about A$1.45 to the US dollar (RBA). Matey's price is in Australian dollars. The Adobe Commerce Marketplace shows prices with a dollar sign and no currency, so we've treated them as US dollars. Every extension costs more for Adobe Commerce than for Magento Open Source.

1. Tidio

Tidio is a live chat app with an AI chatbot called Lyro, and it's the cheapest Magento AI chatbot you set up and train yourself. On Magento it isn't an extension: you paste Tidio's code into your Magento admin, and it works on every plan, including Free.

Best for: small Magento stores with a short list of common questions and an owner who likes tinkering.

Drawbacks: on Magento, Tidio doesn't connect to your catalogue, stock, or orders, so Lyro only knows the answers and pages you give it. The AI is billed by the conversation, so your busiest month costs the most.

Price: the Free plan covers 50 conversations with your team a month, and 50 Lyro AI conversations once. Starter is US$29 a month (about $42) for 100 conversations. Lyro is US$39 a month (about $57) for 50 AI conversations, US$210 (about $304) for 300, and US$700 (about $1,014) for 1,000.

2. Matey

Matey is the Magento AI chatbot for stores that want one built for them, around the way the store actually runs. A matey reads your whole Magento catalogue every night, checks the live price and stock before it recommends anything, shows products with only the sizes and colours you have, and adds them to the customer's real Magento cart.

  • Built from your own data. Your catalogue, prices, stock, policies, buying guides, and blog, plus the rules your staff know but nobody wrote down.
  • No extension. It goes on with one line of code in your Magento admin, sits on top of any theme, and there's nothing to retest when you upgrade Magento.
  • You don't train it. We build it, install it, and keep it accurate. Tell us what's wrong and it's usually fixed within a few hours.
  • Customised however you want. Its name, its tone, what it never says, and how it hands customers to your team.

A first version is usually ready within 24 hours. We've built one on Magento 2 for an outdoor gear store with about 7,300 products.

Best for: Magento stores with a big catalogue, lots of "which one should I buy?" questions, and no time to train a bot or brief a developer.

Drawbacks: a matey isn't a helpdesk. It doesn't look up or refund orders, and it passes those to your team. You pay monthly rather than buying a licence once, and you don't get the code, which some extensions include.

Price: a flat $149 AUD a month, or $1,490 a year, for stores with under 10,000 products. Stores with 10,000 or more are $249 a month, and catalogues of 25,000 or more are quoted. Every matey is built and installed free, the first month is free, conversations are unlimited, and you cancel with an email.

3. Text by LiveChat

Text is the new name for LiveChat's plans, a chat inbox for teams with AI agents included, and it's the Magento AI chatbot for stores with staff who answer chats. LiveChat has a free official extension on the Adobe Commerce Marketplace that shows your team the customer's cart and last order beside the chat.

Best for: Magento stores with one or more people answering chats during the day, who want AI to take the simple questions.

Drawbacks: it's priced per user, so the bill grows with your team. Essential includes only 10 AI resolutions a month, so real AI use means Growth or buying extra packs.

Price: Essential is US$25 a user a month (about $36) with 10 AI resolutions. Growth is US$99 a user a month (about $143) with 200. Extra AI resolutions are US$49.50 (about $72) for 50, on either plan.

4. Shop Guide by Magenable

Shop Guide is an AI chatbot extension for Magento made by Magenable, a Melbourne Magento agency, and it's the Australian-made Magento AI chatbot on the Adobe Commerce Marketplace. It answers from your store's own content using your choice of AI provider.

Best for: Magento Open Source stores with a developer, who want an extension from a local business.

Drawbacks: you set up and pay for the AI provider yourself, and tune its answers yourself. It has no live chat to hand customers to a person, and no reviews on its listing yet.

Price: US$195 a year (about $283) for Magento Open Source, or US$495 a year (about $717) for Adobe Commerce, plus your AI provider's fees.

5. Mirasvit eChat

Mirasvit eChat is a Magento 2 AI chatbot and live chat extension, and it's the cheapest extension here with a person able to take over in the same chat window. It answers from your products, categories, and store pages, and lets customers check their orders after confirming their email.

Best for: Magento stores with a developer and a small team, who want AI and live chat in one extension.

Drawbacks: you install it on your own server, bring your own AI provider, and pay its fees. Support and updates last one year, then cost extra.

Price: US$149 (about $216) for Magento Open Source, including a year of support and updates, then US$90 a year (about $130) to keep them. Adobe Commerce costs more.

6. Meetanshi Magento 2 AI Chatbot

Meetanshi's Magento 2 AI Chatbot is an extension that answers product, store, and order questions using Google's Gemini AI, and it's the cheapest extension here with installation included.

Best for: Magento stores that want an extension without hiring their own developer to put it on.

Drawbacks: it's AI only, with no hand-over to a person in the chat, and Meetanshi's FAQ says your server needs Python installed, which some managed Magento hosts don't allow. You pay the AI fees yourself.

Price: US$299 once (about $433) for Magento Open Source, or US$449 (about $651) for Adobe Commerce, with installation and a year of support and updates included. A year of support after that is US$129 (about $187).

7. Webkul AI Chatbot

Webkul's Magento 2 AI Chatbot using Open Source LLM is the Magento AI chatbot extension for stores that want to run the AI themselves. It works with open AI models you host, or with paid ones, and customers can add to cart from the chat.

Best for: bigger Magento stores with a developer and a server budget, who want the AI on their own servers.

Drawbacks: it's the dearest extension here, and running your own AI models means running your own AI servers. Webkul's pages don't say whether it works with Hyvä.

Price: US$1,299 once (about $1,882) for Magento Open Source, or US$2,598 (about $3,765) for Adobe Commerce. Installation is US$259.80 (about $376), and a year of support is US$649.50 (about $941) after the first three months.

Why are there so few AI chatbots for Magento?

There are so few AI chatbots for Magento because chat app makers build for Shopify first. On the day we wrote this, a search for "ai chatbot" on the Shopify App Store returned 5,271 apps. The same search on the Adobe Commerce Marketplace, where Magento extensions are sold, returned 27, and some of those write product descriptions or work out shipping rather than chat with customers.

The same search on Shopify's app store: 5,271 apps.

Every Shopify store runs on the same platform, so one app works for all of them. Every Magento store is different: its own version, its own theme (Luma or Hyvä), its own extensions, and often its own developer. That makes a Magento AI chatbot harder to build and harder to sell, so most chat apps skip Magento or offer a snippet that knows nothing about your products.

Even the big names leave Magento out. Gorgias' help centre lists its AI Agent as not supported on Magento stores, only Shopify, and its Magento 2 integration starts on the Pro plan at US$360 a month (about $522). If you're weighing up a helpdesk anyway, our guide to Gorgias alternatives compares them in AUD.

Does Magento have a built-in AI chatbot?

No. Magento Open Source has no customer-facing AI chatbot built in. Adobe has announced a Brand Concierge integration for Adobe Commerce, but Brand Concierge is a separate enterprise product with no public price, sold through Adobe's sales team.

For most Australian Magento stores, that means a chatbot comes from an extension or a hosted service, like the seven options here.

Magento AI chatbot extension or hosted chatbot: which is better?

A hosted chatbot is better for most small Australian Magento stores, and an extension is better if you have a Magento developer on hand and want everything on your own server.

Magento AI chatbot extensionHosted AI chatbot
How it goes onInstalled on your server, usually by a developerOne line of code in your Magento admin

Magento upgradesRetested with every Magento and PHP upgradeNothing to retest

The licence is usually the smallest part of an extension's cost. Adobe gives each Adobe Commerce release three years of standard support, and 2.4.6's ended on 11 August 2026 (Adobe). Every upgrade means your developer checks the chatbot extension still works, along with everything else on the store.

How much does a Magento AI chatbot cost?

A Magento AI chatbot costs from about $216 to over $3,600 in its first year, depending on whether you buy an extension or pay for a hosted chatbot by the AI conversation. Here's year one for a Magento Open Source store whose chatbot answers 300 chats a month, from each company's own pricing page.

Magento AI chatbotYear one (AUD)How we worked it out
Mirasvit eChatAbout $216, plus AI fees and a developerUS$149 licence with a year of support

Meetanshi AI ChatbotAbout $433, plus AI feesUS$299, installation included

Webkul AI ChatbotAbout $2,259, plus hosting or AI feesUS$1,299 licence and US$259.80 installation
Text by LiveChatAbout $3,440One Growth seat at US$99 a month, plus two packs of 50 AI resolutions
TidioAbout $3,650300 Lyro AI conversations at US$210 a month, on the Free plan

The extensions look cheapest, but their prices leave out two bills: the AI provider's fees, charged by usage in US dollars, and your developer's hours to install the extension, set up the AI, and retest it after every Magento upgrade. Per-conversation pricing is cheap when you're quiet and dear in your busiest months: Black Friday, Christmas, and EOFY.

What should a Magento AI chatbot know about your store?

A Magento AI chatbot should know your whole catalogue, what's in stock in each size and colour today, your policies, and the advice your staff give. On Magento that's harder than it sounds, because most stores sell configurable products: one jacket, ten sizes, four colours, each with its own stock.

  • Every product, every night. A chatbot that read your site once at setup is out of date by the next sale.
  • Live stock before it recommends anything. Sizes sell out during the day, not overnight.
  • Configurable products done properly. Only the sizes and colours you actually have, shown with the product.
  • Your own content. Buying guides, blog posts, sizing advice, and the rules nobody wrote down.
  • Add to cart. The customer picks a size in the chat and it lands in their real Magento cart.

Matey's Magento 2 build for an outdoor gear store does all five. When we counted across 11 days in October, 476 of the store's 7,300 or so products changed, mostly sizes selling out. Its matey reads the catalogue every night and checks the live shelf before every reply, in about two seconds. Here's a matey on a made-up outdoor store, putting a first camping kit together for a family on a budget:

How do you add an AI chatbot to Magento 2?

You add a hosted AI chatbot to Magento 2 by pasting its code into your store's HTML head in the Magento admin. It takes about five minutes and needs no developer.

  1. In your Magento admin, go to Content, then Design, then Configuration.
  2. Click Edit beside your store view.
  3. Open HTML Head and paste the chatbot's code into Scripts and Style Sheets.
  4. Click Save Configuration.
  5. Go to System, then Cache Management, and refresh the page cache.
  6. Done! Open your store in a new tab and the chatbot is in the corner.

A Magento AI chatbot extension goes on differently. Your developer installs it on the server, runs Magento's setup commands, and then you add your AI provider's key in the extension's settings.

Is there a free Magento AI chatbot?

Yes, but none of them are free to run. Tidio's Free plan works on Magento with 50 AI conversations, once. A few Magento AI chatbot extensions on the Adobe Commerce Marketplace and GitHub are free to download, but you pay the AI and search services they run on, and a developer to set them up.

Who is responsible when a Magento AI chatbot gets it wrong?

The store is. In Australia the ACCC has made it clear that a business can't sidestep the Australian Consumer Law by blaming an algorithm (Inside Retail). What your Magento AI chatbot tells a customer is treated like what your staff say, so a wrong price, a size that isn't there, or a refund promise is your problem.

That's why it matters whether a chatbot checks live prices and stock, or answers from whatever it read at setup. It's also why every option here should send what it isn't sure of to a person.

How do you choose a Magento AI chatbot?

Use the Matey Magento test: seven checks before you pay for any Magento AI chatbot.

  1. Ask it about a configurable product. "Have you got the blue one in a medium?" It should know, today.
  2. Ask it a question only your staff know. "Does this run small?" or "Will this fit a 2019 Hilux?"
  3. Check it knows your whole catalogue, not just the products on your homepage.
  4. Price your busiest month in Australian dollars, including AI fees charged by the conversation.
  5. Ask who handles the next Magento upgrade. For an extension, budget your developer's hours.
  6. Check it works with your theme, Luma or Hyvä, on a phone.
  7. Ask where your customers' chats are stored, and whether you can take them with you.
